General Treatments Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam Fillings

An effective and hard-wearing way to repair damage to the teeth.

Fillings

Amalgam fillings are a well-established and highly effective way to repair tooth damage and fix cavities, particularly in the back teeth.

A filling is a very common procedure and most people, at some point in their lives, will have a cavity that requires attention. Amalgam fillings have been used for many years, and are made from a combination of metals, including tin, copper, silver and a minimal amount of mercury. When in this alloy form, mercury is perfectly safe.

Why choose amalgam fillings?

  • Extremely hard-wearing
  • Less technique-sensitive than composite fillings
  • Less expensive than other restorative methods

What will the treatment involve?

We will use a local anaesthetic to numb the area being treated, before removing the decayed part of the tooth. At this point, we may place a base or liner in your tooth to prevent any sensitivity following your procedure.

The amalgam is mixed and then used to fill your tooth, taking care to ensure every part of the cavity is filled. We will shape the amalgam to resemble your tooth, and smooth it down so it feels comfortable in your mouth.

Aftercare

If properly looked after, amalgam fillings can last for many years and are very suitable for teeth that are subjected to a lot of wear and tear.

Composite fillings, which are white in colour, can also be used to treat decayed teeth. These are more expensive and less durable but some patients prefer their aesthetic look.
